Kedarkantha Trek Itinerary: Day-by-Day Breakdown

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

Begin your journey from the City of Dehradun as you settle into your vehicle and start on the journey to Sankri, a small village and base for the Kedarkantha Trek. The village is an administrative center of the Sankri Block in the district of Shimla around 220 km from Dehradun. The village is about 8-10 hours away from the city and from there the journey through beautiful mountains crossed by rivers gets better. The view of river Yamuna and Tons becomes better after every glance.

We arrive at Sankri in the afternoon tea time, settle into our hotel, and enjoy our meal. For the remaining time, it is good to relax as the next few days of our journey are going to be tiring. The signboard of Sankri village goes all traditional with wooden houses and stunning landscapes around it.

Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (9,100 ft)

The trek officially begins now that we’ve finally arrived! Before everything, enjoy a warm breakfast, put your gears on, and join me as we head uphill towards Juda ka Talab, a calm lake at a high altitude. The trek distance is around 4 km and takes about four to five hours.

The path goes through thick woods of pine and maple trees, with rest spots that provide amazing views of the tall peaks of the Himalayas. As you continue climbing, you will feel the temperature drop as the air gets fresher. Juda Ka Talab welcomes you with its beauty – a snow-capped lake surrounded by pines and snow during winters.

Stay here for the evening, have some hot food, and look at the stars as you create memories.

Day 3: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp

Today’s trek takes you to the Kedarkantha Base which is at an elevation of 3425 meters. This trek is about 4 km in distance and takes around 3-4 hours. You will start to gain elevation gradually moving through snow-covered meadows and big oak and pine forests.

As you arrive at the base of Kedarkantha, your eyes will be filled with stunning views of mountains like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak all around. The view of the campsite here is truly amazing as it is fully covered with white snow from all sides.

After good food, it is best to sleep early to prepare for the next morning’s big climb.

Day 4: Base Camp Kedarkantha and then back again to Juda Ka Talab

Around 3 in the morning, it’s time to start preparing for the Kedarkantha peak. The point you would be climbing to is 3 km away through a very steep but safe route and takes around 4 to 5 hours. Starting the trek so early is helpful because you can see the sun rising above the Himalayan ranges – a moment when the sky turns orange and pink.

On reaching the Kedarkantha peak, one can be sure of having an amazing experience. From a height of 12,500 ft, you can see a clear top view of all the five snow-covered peak ranges like Gangotri, etc. After the Kedarkantha summit, we will head back to Juda ka Talab.

Day 5: Juda Ka Talab to Sankri then Drive Back to Dehradun

The last day of the trek starts with a steady climb down from Juda Ka Talab to Sankri. The entire distance of the trail is around 6 km which takes about 3 to 4 hours. This is the last part of your trek so enjoy it as you pass through dense forests and beautiful open spaces.

Once you reach Sankri, it is time to part ways with the tall mountains and begin your return journey to Dehradun. The road journey is filled with sweet memories and experiences you gathered during the five days.

Best Time to Visit Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha trek can be a little challenging as it requires a decent level of fitness. However, the winter months from December to February are the best, when trekkers can enjoy its real beauty. The hills are covered with snow, making the trek even more enjoyable. Reaching the Kedarkantha summit is also a great experience in itself, with the cool breeze and the sight of snow-covered mountains making it magical.

From March to April, the weather is perfect, as the melting snow along with blooming rhododendrons creates colorful scenery. The warmer weather and sunny blue skies add to the beauty of Kedarkantha trekking.

Before June, avoid the monsoon season, as the trails can be quite dangerous and hard to walk on. After the monsoon, the months of October and November also make the trek very beautiful, as the greenery adds charm to the area, making it a perfect chance for trekking lovers.

Whether you visit during the snowy winter or the colorful autumn season, Kedarkantha will give you a unique experience to remember. Plan your trek according to the season to see its full beauty!
